Kylian Mbappé has been hospitalised due to acute gastroenteritis, Real Madrid have confirmed in an official statement — effectively ruling him out of the Club World Cup.
The French forward, who is yet to feature at the tournament, has been undergoing medical treatment after missing Los Blancos’ opening match against Al-Hilal on Wednesday night.
“Our player Kylian Mbappé has acute gastroenteritis and has been hospitalized for various tests and treatment,” the club said on Thursday.
Mbappé was granted an extended rest period following his participation in the UEFA Nations League with France, but his return has now been further delayed due to illness.
The 25-year-old, who leads Real Madrid in goals this season, missed training earlier this week and was initially believed to be battling a fever. However, the club have now clarified the nature of the illness.
Real Madrid’s next Club World Cup match is scheduled for Friday against Red Bull Salzburg, followed by a potential fixture against Pachuca later this weekend. Mbappé’s involvement has been all but ruled out.
In his absence, Gonzalo García could once again lead the line after scoring the team’s only goal in their 1-1 draw against Al-Hilal.
